Discover your major

Students who are “undeclared” explore their passions and potential career paths while completing General Education (GE) and Seawolf Studies Graduation requirements. Taking lower-division GE classes provides students with first-hand experience in a range of disciplines.

Discovering a major can take a semester or two. Many undeclared students settle into a particular program as their academic home during their second or third semester at Sonoma State. Others declare just before they complete 60 units.

Meet with your advisors

Students often benefit from connecting with both faculty advisors and professional academic advisors.
Dr. Kyla Walters Doughty is the faculty advisor for all undeclared students. Drop in, sign up for her office hours, or email her for an appointment time that works for your schedule at kyla.walters@sonoma.edu.
Meeting with the undeclared faculty advisor and the undeclared professional academic advisor several times each academic year helps students reflect on their interests and goals, while identifying connections to available academic programs and other campus opportunities. Students who are figuring out their major field of study also benefit from attending events sponsored by the Career Center, as well as undeclared advising events.
